Real Madrid has appointed Julen Lopetegui as new Head Coach. Julen Lopetegui will take over as Real Madrid head coach after the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup. Julen Lopetegui has agreed on a three-year contract at Bernabeu. The move comes as a surprise since Lopetegui wasn’t among the prominent coaches that Madrid has linked to this role after Zinedine Zidane has resigned days after Real Madrid 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League final.
It was announced today to everyone about his acceptance of the new deal, though he was on a contract with the Spanish National team. The 51-year-old has been in charge of the national team for the past two (2). Julen Lopetegui has been successful in most of his national team coaching duties.
Former goalkeeper Lopetegui has played for real Madrid and Later move to Barcelona. He took up coaching Job with Madrid’s feeder team Castilla in 2008/2009 before he was called to take charge of Spain youth team. He has won the U19 European Championship with the Spanish in 2012 before repeating the feat as U21 boss 12 months later.
Julen Lopetegui has not been really successful in Club management. He was with Rayo Vallecano Spain’s second division for sometimes since he wasn’t really successful with the club, he was sacked in 2003. He was also with the Portuguese club FC Porto from 2014 to 2016 but after failing to achieve a silverware with the club he left to take over Spain National team.
A month ago, he signed a contract extension with the Spanish national team to remain as the coach until 2020. But when Real Madrid contacted him he could not resist the call. Real Madrid has been successful under Zidane, the Bernabeu also side hope to do well under Lopetegui. Many Madrid players like Sergio Ramos, Carvajal, Marco Asensio and Isco are playing for the Spanish national team, so his careful management and the relationship has with them has contributed to his being given this contract.
Zidane left Real Madrid after winning three successive European Cups in a straight for Real Madrid but he was a distance third from their rival, Barcelona who won the La Liga title. His shock departure from the Bernabeu led to calling of Julen Lopetegui to become the head coach.
Lopetegui will have the task of resolving the future of some players in the team. He will decide if Benzema will continue as the striker of the team. He will also decide if Gareth Bale will continue to play for the team since he has been unhappy under Zidane for not having enough playing time with the club last season.
