Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup group stage matches have been very remarkable. Russia 2018 World Cup started 14 June 2018 and it has been a great moment for the world. Many teams have done well in their first two games and have qualified for the knockout phase of the Russia 2018 World Cup. But some teams have suffered defeat and so losing out of the tournament.

From group A, we have Uruguay and the host nations Russia go through to the next stage of the competition. It was also noteworthy that, the host nation Russia made it to the round of 16 after winning their first two games(Egypt and Saudi Arabia) and losing to Uruguay. Russia 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia in the opening game was very remarkable in the history of FIFA World Cups. On the other hand, Saudi Arabi had their first win in the tournament by beating Egypt on the 25th of June. Egypt went to the World cup and returned with no point and scored only two goals in the tournament and conceding six goals. They were the first African team to go out of the tournament.

From group B, Spain and Portugal make it to the round of 16. Spain finished first in the group after beating Iran and drawing Portugal and Morocco. Thanks to the VARs who saw Iago Aspas goal to be onside helping Spain to level up against Morocco. So far in the tournament, Spain has conceded five goals and has scored six in the tournament. Portugal the runner-up of that group saw off Iran and Morocco to finish second, all thanks to their legend Ronaldo whose goal help them see through. However, Iran could not secure a place in the next stage of the 2018 World Cup tournament despite winning one, drawing one and losing one. Furthermore, Morocco will have no regret pushing Spain the one-time World champions to a draw in order to secure a point in the tournament. Morocco happens to be the second African country to leave the 2018 World Cup tournament after suffering defeat to Iran and Portugal and drawing with Spain in their last match of the tournament.

From group C, France and Denmark proceed to the next phase of the tournament. France which came out first in the group after beating Australia and Peru and drawing with Denmark. So far, France has conceded just a goal and scored three in the tournament. Denmark had their qualification chances after winning Peru and drawing with Australia and France. Denmark finished second with five points. Still, in this group, Peru had their first win against Australia. Peru lost their other two games to France and Denmark. Australia exited the group after suffering defeats to France and Peru. Australia had only one point in the tournament and score only two goals in the tournament.

From group D, Croatia and Argentina make it to the round of 16. Croatia who finished first in the group after winning all their group matches. So far in the tournament, Croatia has conceded only one goal and has scored seven in the tournament. Croatia has nine points. Argentina the runner-up of that group saw off Nigeria and Iceland to finish second. Argentina secured their place in the next phase of the tournament after a late goal from Marcus Rojo to kill the dreams of the Super Eagles of Nigeria. Nigeria could not secure a place in the next stage of the tournament. Nigerian’s dreams of making it to the round of 16 was quenched by Argentina. However, Nigeria also lost to Croatia in their opening game of the tournament. Furthermore, Iceland exited the tournament after losing to Croatia, Nigeria and securing a point against Argentina by pushing Argentina to a draw.

From group E, we have Brazil and Switzerland go through to the next stage of the competition. The five-times Champions, Brazil made it to the next stage of the competition after winning two and drawing one of their games in the group stage of the competition. However, Brazil has conceded three goals in all three group stage matches and have scored five goals in the three games. On the other hand, Switzerland made it to the round of 16 after winning one game and drawing the other two. Switzerland finished second with five points. on the other hand, Serbia had their first win in the tournament by beating Costa Rica in their first leg on the 17th of June. While Costa Rica who finished last in the group had a point after a draw against Switzerland in their last game of the tournament.

From group F, Sweden and Mexico make up to the top of the group after winning two of their group stage matches. Sweden tops the group with six points after beating South Korea and Mexico. Sweden scored five goals in their group stage matches and conceded two. On the other hand, Mexico came as the runner-up of the group with six points after a terrific win over the defending champions, Germany. They also secure a win over South Korea in the second match of the tournament courtesy of goals from Carlos Vela and the man Javier Hernandes. The match ended two goals to one deep into stoppage time when Heung Min Son beat the Mexican goalkeeper with a well-struck shot into the far end of the post. However, the most telling match of the group was between the South Koreans and the Germans. A win for the Germans and a draw for the Sweden meant the Germans would qualify. The Germans played there best but history was again repeated, the reigning champions of the world could not proceed to the next round of the competition. It was the South Koreans at the 3rd position while the Germans sat at the bottom of the table.

From Group G, Belgium and England made it to the top of the group after winning two of their games. In the first game between Belgium and Panama, Belgium were held to a stalemate in the first half after which a goal from Dries Mertens and brace from Lukaku broke the deadlock. England on the other hand almost drew their first game with Tunisia if not for poor defending gifted Harry Kane his brace for the night. the Tunisians had more to worry about when they went head to head with the Belgians who were no underdog in this competition. The match ended five goals to two in favour of the Belgians. Panama who were termed underdogs to England has whitewashed six goals to one. It was also a memorable day for the Panamas who scored their first goal of the tournament in that match. Their celebration surpassed even that of the English players and fans who already had six goals to their name. The last games of the group were just a playoff for both teams. England and Belgium who already qualified rested key players for the next round of the competition while Tunisia and Panama who had both their pride to play for went head to head. The Belgians won the last group game and top the table with a single goal from the former Manchester United player Januzaj. The Tunisians sat in the third row of the table after beating Panama two goals to one, they were the fourth African country that exited the world cup from the group stage. Panama had nothing to worry about at the bottom of the table, at least they went home with two world cup goals.

From Group H, the first match was a cracker between Columbia and Japan. Columbia who played with ten men were beaten two goals to one. The Senegalese showed great promise as they were the only African team to win their first group match. In the Second group game between Senegal and Japan, the drama began to unfold when the Senegalese could not seal their place in the next round after having a head start twice in the game. The Japanese fought so hard to come back twice into the game. The Colombians, on the other hand, were not so kind to the Polish. they whitewashed them three goals to nil. It was a glimpse of hope for the Colombians who needed a win against Senegal in the next game to proceed to the next round.  Afterwards, The Senegalese were sent packing Courtesy of the new FIFA fair play rule after they lost one zero to Colombia. The Japanese made history when they became the first beneficiary of the FIFA rule. They too could not stand their ground against the Polish team, and they were defeated by a lone goal. After all said and done the Senegalese joined the other African teams. The Colombians topped the group with six points and the Japanese on the second spot with same goals and same point with the Senegalese in the third position, the polish went home with three points.
